A video has gone viral on the internet in China showing a woman rejecting her boyfriend’s proposal of marriage in the street because his home doesn’t have a proper toilet.
The man proposed to the women one evening in Nanning in the Guangxi region of southern China, the Metropolis Express newspaper reported.
“Your family doesn’t even have a toilet, not even a place to take a bath. You ask me to marry you? You are so funny!” the woman is shown shouting at the man in a quarrel that drew a large number of spectators.
The man later leaves, without saying a word.
The video posted on the newspaper’s social media account on Saturday was viewed more than 10 million times in less than a day.
The man’s public embarrassment touched on two serious issues in China. The large number of men unable to find a wife because of the gender imbalance on the mainland and the soaring cost of housing in many cities.
Estimates of the number of single men unable find a wife China range between 30 to 40 million.
The lower number of women in China compared to men is partly due to families’ traditional preference to have sons. Grooms also often have to pay huge sums to brides’ parents in rural areas to secure their hand in marriage.
The video has sparked fierce debate on mainland social media.
Some criticised the woman, while others said she was right to emphasis practical considerations.
“A toilet …this is really the minimum requirement,” one person wrote on social media.
Another said: “What I heard is a woman’s sad and desperate cry out.”
