Jesuit Education/Beijing
[...be very afraid, me]
The Jesuits have more than four hundred years of involvement in education, starting with their first college in Italy. Today there are hundreds of Jesuit high schools and universities all over the world. In the US, there are now 28 Jesuit colleges and universities.
Jesuit education draws its inspiration from the values of the Gospel and also from the liberal education of the Greco-Roman tradition, helping young men and women to become free citizens. Jesuit education takes the whole person into account and fosters not only intellectual development, but also moral and spiritual growth. Intellect and faith are seen as complementary, not contradictory.
In China, the Jesuits have been active in the field of education since the Ming dynasty. Then, the Italian Jesuit Alfonso Vagnone presented for the first time in Chinese language the ideals of Jesuit education.
In the early twentieth century, the Jesuits established high schools and universities in China including Aurora University in Shanghai and Jingu University in Tianjin.
At The Beijing Center, we continue educating young men and women to understand in depth Chinese culture and society in a spirit of respect and mutual enrichment.
