A man who was wanted in relation to the kidnapping and subsequent death of a prominent Greater Toronto Area real estate agent three years ago will face trial in China.
On Jan. 20, 2011, Peel Regional Police began to investigate the disappearance of two men — Xiu Jun (Johnny) Fei and Jiangou (Tony) Han.
The two had gone missing from a large Mississauga home that Fei was then putting up for sale. Police soon determined that the men had been kidnapped and were being held for ransom.
Six days after police were called in, Fei was found wandering in a Toronto parking lot. His captors had let him go.
Han's remains were found in a Markham, Ont., home almost six months later. Police say he died while in captivity.
According to police “the majority” of people charged in this crime have been dealt with in the courts.
Guo Wei Wu, however, was not apprehended until last October, when he was arrested by Chinese authorities on what police say was an unrelated matter.
Police allege that Wu was "the orchestrator" of the "criminal conspiracy" that resulted in Han’s death.
Chinese authorities notified the RCMP that Wu had been arrested.
Police say that China does not have an extradition treaty with Canada, though it allows its citizens to be tried for crimes committed here.
Evidence that police have gathered in Canada will be handed over to Chinese authorities, after being approved by federal justice officials.
Following that approval, Wu will face trial in China for the offence of intentional homicide.
