Immigration Minister Jason Kenney tabled the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act Wednesday to “expedite the removal of foreign criminals from Canada and to enhance the safety and security of Canadians,” according to a statement.
“The Harper Government is putting a stop to foreign criminals relying on endless appeals in order to delay their removal from Canada during which time they continue to terrorize innocent Canadians,” said Kenney.
“Canadians are generous and welcoming people, but they have no tolerance for criminals and fraudsters abusing our generosity.”
Kenney has been under fire from the opposition this week for removing special health benefits granted to refugees.
Kenney said the cuts mean refugees will not get better health service than other Canadians, while opposition parties say the additional treatment is often necessary given the troubling circumstances from which some refugees have fled.
