There was a coup attempt in China yesterday Jan 25 2026, but Xi unfortunately received intelligence two hours before the incident and has since arrested nearly 3,000 people, including military personnel and their families.

China has been planning and implementing their military doctrine for about 20 years now. Especially in preparation for Taiwan and naval battle with the US and Indopacom allies. But what they don't have is actual experience with their battle doctrine, because they haven't been in actual military combat anywhere in the world for the last 50 years or so. And their current command structure has only been around for about 30 years.

What the US and it's allies have in spades is actual experience in combat and how their battle doctrines are shaped by those experiences. The US is notorious for changing their doctrine every few years or so, much to the consternation of their allies, because they know that the battlefield changes in every conflict they are involved in or not. Ukraine itself was a massive shakeup just in the areas of logistics, artillery, defensive posture, and especially new technology such as drones and surveillence. One of the biggest duties of US Special Forces isn't just covert ops and training foreign forces, but also reporting back exact reports of anything happening on a battlefield. These reports are then analyzed thoroughly to see if it conflicts with any battle doctrine, and then changed accordingly. The US military is also known to very quickly adapt these new doctrines into everyday operations, and also share them with allies.

The most current naval doctrine was changed because of Yemen, and how they handle land based attacks on our ships. Guarantee you this is analyzed in case of any war with China and we have to repel attacks from the mainland. But I also guarantee you that China doesn't have similar doctrine if their naval forces are attacked from Taiwan.

Zhang Youxia would be sidelined while authorities probed him and another senior official on the country’s all-important Central Military Commission (CMC).

Was this a political coup by Chinese leader Xi Jinping against a powerful rival?

Or was it just another push to clear out corruption amid Xi's decade-and-a-half anti-graft campaign; an effort to strengthen the People's Liberation Army (PLA) for when it may use force against Taiwan, as Xi has warned?

Following a purge last year which removed two other commanders, the CMC now has just two members—the Chinese president and his “enforcer,” General Zhang Shengmin, head of the PLA's discipline unit.
Such a low number at the apex of military authority indicates a massive concentration of power by Xi. Even the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s late Chairman Mao Zedong had five people on his military commission. In China, the PLA is the party's army, but traditionally it has also been given room to run its own affairs. The CMC is where they interface.

It's also where the CCP asserts its political control. Xi is chairman of the CMC and Zhang Youxia was the first vice chairman, effectively No. 2.

So analysts are watching closely to work out what the abrupt shift at the top of China's military really means.

The US-China rivalry has gone well beyond trade.
