Manaia tin fish “unfit” for humans

TINNED WORMS: A Fagali’i family got more than they wished for with this brand of tinned fish.
The label on the tin shows a healthy looking slab of pink-fleshed fish on fresh green taro leaves.
Inside the tin is a quite – stomach churning – different story.
The Ministry of Health has issued a public notice to advise members of the public against eating a brand of tinned fish called “Manaia Mackeral in Natural Oil.”
THE PROOF: A family took photos of the worms – government tests confirm the fish is unfit for human consumption.
It is now declared to be “unfit for human consumption.”
This is the second incident since May of contaminated tinned fish from Asia to prompt an official health warning.
This latest alarm was raised by a family from Fagali’i earlier this week who received four boxes of tinned fish from a funeral three weeks ago.
A woman from the family, who did not want to be named, said that her brother ate one can and got a stomach ache from it.
Later on that day, 7th Saturday September 2013, they opened up four cans to make their afternoon meal and found worms in all four cans.
She also told Samoa Observer that they took these cans to the Ministry of Health on Monday morning.
The Ministry of Health was unable to comment yesterday.
However, a public notice was issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of Health informing members of the public against eating Manaia tinned fish.
The product comes from China.
Similar to other countries, China mass produces food lines that are then given custom labels to suit particular markets – in this case “Manaia” for Samoa.
Manaia is the Samoa word for someone or something nice, attractive or handsome.
ASIA AGAIN: Manaia tinned fish actually comes from China, not Samoa.
Details of the tinned fish:
Batch number – 3502/01024/301
Production date: 26/03/2013
Expiry Date: 26/03/2016
