Forbidden photographs depict the true North Korean army
While tourists are able to visit North Korea as part of a controlled tour group, they are asked by their handlers to never take photographs of soldiers. These pictures taken by photographer Eric Lafforgue show the reality of military service in the secretive state
Gifted pupils can get away with only serving for a few years before they are catapulted up the ranks and given a comparatively cushy job in government.
But there is a massive problem with the North Korean army - food.
Despite a propaganda photo showing the former Dear Leader dishing out bowls of soup to dedicated soldiers, malnourishment is prevalent throughout the country and those in the army do not get particularly privileged treatment - many flee the forces for this very reason.
The pictures show rows of new recruits training to become the next wave of Kim Jong-un's fighting machine, ready to do their leader's bidding on a moment's notice.

Cadets have an extra incentive to graduate from the military - only then are they allowed to leave group accommodation and have a sexual partner.
For many years, under Kim Jong-il, young soldiers were forbidden from having girlfriends because it would distract them from their mission.

Some soldiers are seen smiling and striking a pose while a female officer strokes a lethargic looking dog, proving it is not all doom and gloom under the dumpy despot's rule.
