Petition for Democratic Accountability:
A Call for Michael Ma to Explain His Floor-Crossing and Seek a New Mandate.
Michael Ma, the Member of Parliament for Markham–Unionville, was elected by over 27,000 voters as a Conservative representative — voters who entrusted him to defend Conservative principles, hold the Liberal government to account, and represent their values in Ottawa.
His sudden decision to cross the floor and join the Liberal Party is not simply a
personal choice or a routine political maneuver. It is a unilateral act that changes the political alignment, representation, and power balance in Parliament, all without consulting the people who elected him.
This is not a local matter; this decision carries national consequences.
By switching sides, Michael Ma has potentially moved the Liberal Party closer to securing majority control — a result that voters in Markham–Unionville never authorized.
Floor-crossing, when conducted without public consultation or electoral renewal, undermines three core pillars of Canadian democracy:
Transparency, Accountability, and Voter mandate.
Voters cast ballots for a platform, a vision, and a set of values — not merely a name on a ballot. When an MP abandons the platform he campaigned on, he effectively nullifies the democratic choice made by his constituents.
Many parliamentary democracies, including Australia and India, have established safeguards requiring MPs who cross the floor to resign and recontest their seat in a by-election. Canada, however, offers no such protection to voters. As a result, 27,000 constituents in Markham–Unionville have seen their representation switch overnight from Conservative to Liberal without their consent.
This is unacceptable.
We, the voters and supporters of Markham–Unionville, therefore make the following demands:
1. A Full Public Explanation
Michael Ma must immediately and publicly explain the reasons behind his decision to leave the Conservative Party and join the Liberal government.
2. A By-Election for Democratic Legitimacy
Given the magnitude of this political shift — and its potential impact on the national balance of power — Michael Ma must step down and call a by-election. Only through a new vote can the people of Markham–Unionville affirm or reject this drastic change in representation.
3. Parliamentary Reform on Floor-Crossing
We urge Parliament to consider legislative mechanisms requiring any MP who crosses the floor to seek a renewed mandate from their constituents. Democracy cannot function on trust alone; it must be supported by safeguards.
This is not a partisan attack. This is a democratic principle.
Whether one supports the Conservative Party or the Liberal Party, every Canadian voter deserves representation that reflects their choice — not a decision made behind closed doors.
By signing this petition, you stand for transparency, accountability, and electoral integrity.
You stand with the people of Markham–Unionville and with Canadians across the country who believe that no MP should have the power to overturn the will of their voters without facing them again at the ballot box.
Statement from MP Michael Ma
December 11, 2025

“After listening carefully to the people of Markham–Unionville in recent weeks and reflecting with my family on the direction of our country, I have informed the Speaker and the Leader of the Opposition that I will be joining Prime Minister Mark Carney in the government caucus.
“This is a time for unity and decisive action for Canada’s future.
“I came to Canada at twelve years old as the youngest of seven, quickly learning the importance of hard work and resilience. Those values — building up others, delivering results, and choosing a path that creates opportunity — have guided me throughout my career in business and now as a Member of Parliament.
“In that spirit, I have concluded that Prime Minister Mark Carney is offering the steady, practical approach we need to deliver on the priorities I hear every day while door knocking in Markham–Unionville. That includes making life more affordable, growing a strong Canadian economy, strengthening community safety, and creating real opportunities for young people and families who are working hard to build their Canadian dream.
“I entered public service to help people — to focus on solutions, not division. I look forward to working with Prime Minister Carney to make sure that Markham–Unionville, and all of Canada, can move forward with confidence and build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future.”
