The man accused of killing a doctor at a Chinese medical clinic last week made his second appearance in court on Friday and the case has now been adjourned for the weekend.

Police were called to the Perpetual Wellness clinic in the Central Landmark building on Centre Street and 16 Avenue N on June 16 for reports of a stabbing.

The owner of the clinic, Tiejun Huang, 51, was killed after a man walked into the facility with a knife and an altercation ensued. A woman was injured in the attack and was treated in hospital and released.

Jin Qing Huang, 42, was taken into custody at the scene and charged with first-degree murder.

He made his first court appearance on Monday and was given time to secure a lawyer.

On Friday, Adriano Iovinelli, Huang’s lawyer, raised concerns about his client’s mental state and called it ‘an extremely difficult situation.’

“People can’t image the stress that is caused by this and that’s part and parcel of the concern, whether or not the concerns that we have are caused by just being charged with murder or whether or not there’s true mental health concerns,” he said. ““Right now, it’s just a concern that he understands that process, the roles of the Crown, the judge, the defence council and there are apparent mental health concerns and they should be addressed right now before taking any instructions.”

The case has been adjourned until Monday when Huang will be seen by a forensic psychiatrist to determine if a 30 day assessment will be required.
