Classical pianist Lang Lang has ignited a controversy by playing an anti-American song during a state dinner at the White House. The song "My Motherland" is from a movie set during the Korean War which depicts Chinese soldiers fighting U.S. troops.

It was a lively scene as pianist Lang Lang played tunes for U.S. and Chinese leaders at a state dinner in the White House on January 19.

But the U.S. delegation might not have been smiling, had they known what he was playing—the theme song to a famous anti-American movie.

The song, "My Motherland" is from the Chinese communist propaganda movie "Battle on Shangganling Mountain." It's about Chinese soldiers fighting Americans during the Korean War.

It ends with a verse which can be translated as, "When friends are here, there is fine wine, but if the jackal comes, what greets it is the hunting rifle." The 'jackal' refers to the United States.

After the recital, U.S. President Barack Obama told the Chinese delegation how proud the United States was to host them. Then he handed the microphone to Chinese leader Hu Jintao who praised Lang Lang's performance and hugged the artist.

Lang Lang is a respected musician in both countries and spends half his time in America. He explained his reasons for choosing the song in a blog post: "Playing this song, praising China to heads of state from around the world seems to tell them that our China is formidable, that our Chinese people are united. I feel deeply honored and proud."

The event has set the blogosphere on fire, with some Chinese bloggers praising Lang Lang with anti-American comments, while others point out the depth of the insult
