Chinese Virus : U.S. Lawmakers Call on WHO Director to Resign

Posted On 06 Apr 2020

The UN’s World Health Organization [WHO] is coming under extraordinary scrutiny in recent days as it becomes clearer and clearer that Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was more concerned about helping China cover-up the virus in the early days and weeks than he was about getting accurate medical information out to the world. With independent studies showing that Beijing could have prevented up to 95% of coronavirus infections by taking an honest, science-based approach to the disease, WHO is being rightfully criticized for their role in furthering Chinese propaganda.
“A reevaluation of World Health Organization [WHO] leadership is urgently called for,” Sen. Ted Cruz wrote Friday. “By consistently bending to the Chinese Communist Party, from downplaying the severity of the #coronavirus to systematically excluding Taiwan, it has lost the credibility necessary to be effective.”
Cruz is not the only lawmaker calling on Tedros to step aside.
“The WHO needs to stop covering for China,” Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) said Thursday. “I think Dr. Tedros needs to step down. We need to take some action to address this issue. It’s just irresponsible, it’s unconscionable what they have done here while we have people dying across the globe.”
Also weighing in was Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE), who told the Washington Free Beacon, “The World Health Organization is supposed to fight diseases, not coddle tyrants. We’re in the middle of a public health crisis, but after Americans beat this virus we need to have a serious reckoning with the World Health Organization.”
Lest you believe that this is merely a preoccupation of Republican lawmakers, criticism of WHO is not limited to the U.S., much less the Republican Party. Indeed, there is a global petition circulating online that has, as of Monday, collected more than 700,000 signatures. The point of the petition? To call for the resignation of Dr. Tedros.
“We strongly think Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is not fit for his role as WHO Director General. We call for Immediate Resignation,” reads the Change.org petition.
“A lot of us are really disappointed, we believe WHO is supposed to be politically neutral,” the petition continues. “Without any investigation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus solely believes the death and infected numbers that the Chinese government provided.”
The United Nations has come under fire repeatedly for giving totalitarian states the last word when it comes to all manner of human rights violations. Here, the organization’s predilection to stick up for and defend tyranny has had disastrous ramifications for the world. If the World Health Organization can do no better than this during the worst public health crisis in living memory, then what good is it to the world?
