PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy were spotted after the recent federal election viewing an apartment in Point Piper — near where they live — but it was not intended for them.
They were looking, mostly out of curiosity, should their Singapore-based son, Alex, a hedge fund manager, and his wife, Yvonne Wang, think of buying a bolthole in Sydney.
They dropped into the open inspection of an unrenovated 1960s apartment, apparently on the spur of the moment, while taking an early-afternoon stroll around their blue-ribbon neighbourhood.
They didn’t turn up to the subsequent auction where 14 parties registered to bid from the 27 potential buyers who took contracts.
Last traded in 1966 at $60,200, the apartment was knocked down to buyers who came from Kangaroo Point.
Lucy later told friends they weren’t really in the market for an apartment and certainly not that expensive.
It sold for $4.3 million, which was some $1.2 million over reserve.
With the highest price in the block previously being $3.8 million next door, Belle Property Double Bay agent Albert Sassoon had marketed it as a “house-sized apartment”.
It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a balcony with harbour views from its St Mervyns Ave vantage point.
The Turnbulls paid $5.4 million for their five-bedroom mansion back in 1994.
Alex worked for Goldman Sachs before joining a private equity firm in Singapore.
PRODUCER HOTFOOTS IT OUT OF GRAND HOME
HE might have bought it only a year ago, but Australia’s most awarded producer, choreographer and director David Atkins is already intent on shuffling on from his Manly family home.
He paid $5.4 million last July for the grand 1908 family residence that has been listed for an August 20 auction.
Atkins married his sweetheart Elli early last year at Whale Beach hotspot Jonah’s, in a wedding that featured a passing light plane with a banner reading “I love you 1000 kisses deep”.
Plus fireworks, of course.
The five-bedroom home sits on a 903sq m private parcel, with landscaped gardens designed by Annie Wilkes including a lawn lined with manchurian pear trees.
There are views of the harbour from the entertaining terrace and the numerous balconies.
The agents, Red Property’s Richard Davies and Luke Newby, know the property, having marketed it when it last sold. But they aren’t confirming $6 million-plus hopes.
Atkins created and performed in one of the first successful Australian musicals, Hot Shoe Shuffle, in 1993. The production later transferred to London’s Queen’s Theatre.
He has starred in, produced, directed, choreographed and created more than 20 musicals worldwide.
Atkins is best remembered for his work on the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
LUCKED IN
FORMER media executive Cameron O’Reilly has listed his Top of The Town Darlinghurst penthouse for sale through estate agent Alison Coopes.
Overlooking the Sydney CBD, it was 2007 when bought from the Sutton car dealership family.
The dual-level apartment has been rebuilt with swathes of glass and marble.
The home, which has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, has 700sq m of space, including its impressive rooftop lawn.
O’Reilly — the son of media magnate Tony O’Reilly — faces likely competition from MONA founder David Walsh’s Horizon penthouse which is also in the offing.
LOOSE LIPS
A LOVER of Bondi Beach apartments, fund manager Will Vicars couldn’t help himself when the Pacific Bondi development was completed.
He made headlines in 2013 when he broke the Australia apartment record, having bought two adjoining “lighthouse” penthouses off-the-plan for a combined $21.9 million. And now he’s extended on his purchases, spending another $11 million on another recently completed apartment on the top floor of the Campbell Pde complex.
Vicars, who also owns property on Seven Shillings Beach and in Woollahra and Bowral, is the chief investment officer of Caledonia Investments.
