Delegation Delegação Oficial Official Delegation State Visit to the People’s Republic of China Visita ao Brasil, 2012 October 16 to 24, 2013 His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston Governor General of Canada David Johnston began his professional career as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University in 1966, moving to the Law Faculty at the University of Toronto in 1968. He became dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario in 1974. In 1979, he was named principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University, and in July 1994, he returned to the McGill Faculty of Law as a full-time professor. In June 1999, he became the fifth president of the University of Waterloo. Mr. Johnston has served on many provincial and federal task forces and committees. He has also served on the boards of a number of companies. He was president of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and of the Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec. He was the founding chair of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, chaired the federal government’s Information Highway Advisory Council, and served as the first non-American chair of the Board of Overseers at Harvard University. He is the author or co-author of two dozen books, holds honorary doctorates from with two dozen universities, and was awarded the Order of Canada (Companion) in 1997. Mr. Johnston holds an LL.B. from Queen’s University (1966), an LL.B. from the University of Cambridge (1965), and an AB from Harvard University (1963). While at Harvard, he was twice selected for the All-American hockey team and is a member of Harvard’s Athletic Hall of Fame. His academic specializations include securities regulation, information technology and corporate law. Her Excellency Sharon Johnston Mrs. Johnston graduated as a physical and occupational therapist in 1966, from the University of Toronto. She worked in the area of child psychiatry. She completed a master’s and doctorate in rehabilitation science, all while raising her five daughters. At the master’s level, she studied a more effective way of clearing the small airways of cystic fibrosis sufferers. Her doctoral thesis examined the coordination of respiratory muscles during normal speech, stuttered speech and singing. Her thesis resulted in the publication of scientific articles on respiratory mechanics. While her husband, David Johnston, was president of the University of Waterloo (Ontario), Mrs. Johnston managed for 12 years a hundred-acre farm and a small horse-boarding business called Chatterbox Farm. Mrs. Johnston has a novel-in-progress, begun in the postgraduate program for writers at Humber College. The novel is a fictional account of life in southwestern Alberta during a colourful, post-Great War era, and is based on the experiences of Mrs. Johnston’s grandmother. The Honourable John Baird Beijing Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird was first elected to the House of Commons in 2006, and re-elected in 2008 and 2011. During that time, he has served in multiple roles, namely president of the Treasury Board; minister of the Environment; minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities; and leader of the Government in the House of Commons. He was named to his current portfolio following the federal election of May 2011. Prior to entering federal politics, Mr. Baird was a member of Ontario’s provincial legislature, where he represented the constituency of Nepean–Carleton from 1995 to 2005. During that time, he served as minister of Community and Social Services, Energy, Francophone Affairs, Children and Youth Services, and as Government House leader. Maclean’s Magazine and the Historica-Dominion Institute named him 2010 Parliamentarian of the Year, after a vote by his colleagues in all parties in the House of Commons. Mr. Baird is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Kiwanis Club of Nepean, and of Canada’s largest Association for Community Living. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political studies from Queen’s University.
The Honourable Joe Oliver Beijing Minister of Natural Resources The Honourable Joe Oliver is Canada’s minister of Natural Resources. He was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in May 2011. Prior to his election to Parliament, Mr. Oliver had a career in the investment banking industry. He started at Merrill Lynch, and served in senior positions at other investment dealers and as executive director of the Ontario Securities Commission. He was then appointed president and chief executive officer of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada. He also played a prominent role as chair of the Advisory Committee of the International Council of Securities Associations and as chair of the Consultative Committee of the International Organization of Securities Commissions. A graduate of the Directors Education Program at the Rotman School of Management, he was a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators and sat on the board of the Canadian Securities Institute Research Foundation. Mr. Oliver is an active member of his community and has volunteered for various charities in Canada. He served as chair of the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada for four years, and as a member of the board of Mount Sinai Hospital. Mr. Oliver obtained both his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Civil Law degrees at McGill University. He was called to the Quebec Bar and later graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. Chungsen Leung Member of Parliament Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism Mr. Chungsen Leung was elected as a member of Parliament in 2011, and was appointed parliamentary secretary for Multiculturalism. Prior to entering politics, Mr. Leung was a businessman with global experience in urban transit systems, housing construction, manufacturing of electronic products and disaster mitigation. He was involved in the initial feasibility study for the urban transit systems in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. His ecological housing designs received five national awards in Canada for energy efficiency, sustainable building material, cost-effective building practises, and “healthy” homes. Mr. Leung received his education in public accounting and engineering here in Canada and in the United States.
Wai Young Member of Parliament Co-Chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association Born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver, Wai Young is the member of Parliament for Vancouver South. Elected to the House of Commons in 2011, Ms. Young is a member of the standing committees for the Status of Women and for the Scrutiny of Regulations. She has previously served on the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security. She is co-chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association and vice-chair of the British Columbia/Yukon Government Caucus. Prior to her election, Ms. Young worked as a consultant at both the provincial and federal levels. She was an entrepreneur and activist working to strengthen communities by developing social policies and programs in Vancouver and across Canada. In addition to operating her own consulting business, Ms. Young worked with the South Vancouver Policing Centre; Family Services of Greater Vancouver; the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games Organizing Committee (VANOC); the Vancouver Chinatown Business Improvement Association; S.U.C.C.E.S.S.; the Immigrant Services Society; MOSAIC; and many others. Ms. Young chaired Canada’s first Youth-At-Risk Task Force (leading to youth prevention and anti-gang initiatives), and established Canada’s longest-running breakfast program for underprivileged children. Ms. Young obtained a degree in sociology from the University of British Columbia. She is a mother to twins and has been a foster mother to seven foster children. Don Davies Member of Parliament Don Davies is the official Opposition critic for International Trade; deputy critic for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism; and vice-chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1963, Mr. Davies holds a bachelor’s degree in political science (1985) and an LL.B. (1988) from the University of Alberta. First elected to the House of Commons in 2008, and re-elected in 2011, he is a member of the New Democratic Party of Canada. Mr. Davies represents the electoral district of Vancouver Kingsway, one of the most multicultural ridings in the country, with 43 per cent of his constituents being Canadians of Chinese heritage. He sits on the executive of the Canada-China Parliamentary Association and the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association, and is a Canadian delegate to the Council of Europe. Mr. Davies has previously held the critic posts of Public Safety and National Security, and of Western Economic Diversification. One of the most active members of the Canadian Parliament, he has consistently ranked in the top 10 in debates and private-member legislation. Prior to being elected to Parliament, Mr. Davies was the director of legal services for a major trade union (1992-2008); a policy advisor to the NDP leader in Alberta (1989-1991); and a practising lawyer.
Earl Dreeshen Member of Parliament Earl Dreeshen was born in Red Deer, Alberta, and is well respected in business circles in the city, and in area towns and villages. He and his wife, Judy, are fourth-generation farmers who own and operate a family farm near Pine Lake, Alberta. They have two grown children: Megan and Devin. Mr. Dreeshen holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta and taught mathematics at the Innisfail High School for 34 years; he retired in June 2008. He also devoted his time and expertise to working with area youth, coaching football, fastball, track and field, volleyball and minor hockey. He was elected to the Elnora Hospital Board, serving for many years as its chair. He also served as chair of the Eltrohills Health Advisory Committee, working toward improved health care standards in the Three Hills, Trochu, and Elnora communities. Mr. Dreeshen was elected member of Parliament for the Red Deer constituency in 2008, and re-elected in 2011. He currently serves as a member of both the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics. He is also a member of the Post-Secondary Education Caucus and has served as a Canadian delegate for the ParlAmericas. Scott Simms Member of Parliament Scott Simms was first elected as the member of Parliament for BonavistaGander-Grand Falls-Windsor on June 28, 2004. He has served as Liberal critic of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, assistant critic of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and first vice-chair of the Canadian Heritage Committee. Mr. Simms has been a member of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, an associate member of the Fisheries and Oceans Committee, and a member of the Standing Committee on National Defence, studying search and rescue response time. He was also elected by his peers as chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Caucus. On September 18, 2013, Mr. Simms was elected by his colleagues as chair of the Liberal Atlantic Caucus. He was also appointed by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau to serve as critic for Democratic Reform and as a member of the Public Accounts Committee. Prior to his political endeavours, Mr. Simms delivered the national weather forecast on The Weather Network. He studied commerce at Mount Allison University, in New Brunswick, and broadcast journalism at Loyalist College, in Ontario. Guy Saint-Jacques Ambassador of Canada to the People’s Republic of China Guy Saint-Jacques (BA [Geology], Université de Montréal, 1974; MA [Land Planning and Regional Development], Laval University, 1976) joined the Department of External Affairs in 1977. His postings have included New York City, Mexico City, Kinshasa, Washington D.C., and London. (He has served as deputy head of mission in both London and Washington, two of Canada’s most important diplomatic missions.) At Headquarters, he has served with the Consular Affairs, Francophone Africa, and Science and Technology divisions, and the Office of the Associate Deputy Minister. He also served as deputy director of the Environment and Energy Division, as director of both the Personnel (Political and Commercial) and the Assignments divisions, and as director general of the Personnel Management Bureau. He most recently served as chief negotiator and ambassador for climate change for the Government of Canada. Fluent in Mandarin, this is Mr. Saint-Jacques’ fourth posting to the People’s Republic of China. He has previously served in Hong Kong and twice in Beijing. Mr. Saint-Jacques is married to Sylvie Cameron, and they have two daughters.
Rick Savone Shanghai/Nanjing Consul General of Canada in Shanghai Riccardo Savone (BA [economics, minor in management], McGill University, 1995; Executive MBA, Temple University, 2003) joined the public service in 1991. He has held various analyst positions with the departments of the environment, transport, agriculture and revenue. In 1996, he joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade as a political relations program manager in Algiers. From 1999 to 2003, he was a trade commissioner and head of the Canadian Trade Office in Princeton, New Jersey; then, until 2005, he was a trade commissioner in Mexico City. From 2005 to 2007, he was the senior trade commissioner in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He then returned to Ottawa where he served as director of the North America Commercial Relations division. From 2009 to 2010, he was director general of the Geographic Strategy and Services Bureau. Most recently, he was director general of the Office of Transformation. Philippe Rheault Chengdu Consul General of Canada in Chongqing Philippe Rheault (BA Honours [philosophy and political science], McGill University, 1990; LLB, McGill University, 1994) worked in international development and as a journalist in Costa Rica, prior to becoming a lawyer in Montréal in 1995. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1998. He has had assignments abroad in Havana and in Beijing as second secretary; in Chongqing as consul; and in Ulaanbaatar as counsellor and senior trade commissioner. In Ottawa, Mr. Rheault worked in trade policy and as a deputy director in the North Asia Relations Division. In 2006, he took leave from the department for one year to work as a mining executive in China. In 2009, he became director for trade and investment at the Canadian Trade Office, in Taipei. Mr. Rheault became Canada’s first consul general in Chongqing in April 2012. He is fluent in Mandarin, Spanish, English and French. Weldon Epp Guangzhou Consul General of Canada in Guangzhou Weldon Epp joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1996 as a foreign service officer. In Ottawa, he served in the China and Mongolia Division, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Division, and Assignments Division. Abroad he served in Beijing as second secretary and vice-consul, in Taipei as director of general relations, in Jakarta as political counsellor, and on short assignments in Geneva, Islamabad and Phnom Penh. Angela J. Bogdan Chief of Protocol of Canada Ms. Bogdan, a career diplomat, is the current chief of Protocol for Canada and the former inspector general of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). Since joining the department in 1984, she has held several foreign assignments, most recently as high commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and previously as ambassador to the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Ms. Bogdan has served as a political counsellor in Warsaw; as deputy political advisor at Canada’s Mission to NATO; and as vice-consul in Melbourne. At Headquarters, she was the head of Nuclear Policy in the Defence Relations Division, and was also assigned to the Asia-Pacific Relations and United Nations divisions. Ms. Bogdan is a former director of the Global Partnership Program, Canada’s $1 billion cooperative threat reduction programme and has held several other HQ Assignments including Head of Nuclear Policy in the Defence Relations Division, Asia Pacific Relations and United Nations Divisions. Ms. Bogdan holds a BA in International Relations, a BEd and a Master Degree in Strategic Studies from York University in Toronto. She is married to Gary Firth and they have 4 children. Patricia Jaton Deputy Secretary to the Governor General Before joining the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, Patricia Jaton worked for five years at the Canada School of Public Service, holding various positions, including that of director general of the Language Training Centre. She was also director general of the Corporate Leadership Development Programs, where she led the design, development and delivery of new programs and courses for senior leaders, executives and high-potential employees in the Public Service of Canada, and for board members of crown corporations. Prior to this, Ms. Jaton worked at Health Canada for 12 years. She led the creation of several new services, including the Centre for Workplace Ethics, the Internal Disclosure Office and the Ombudsman Service. Although these three services were centralized in Ottawa, they were available to employees from across the country. Between 1989—when she began her career in the Public Service—and 2000, she worked in human resources and held a variety of positions within several departments. She studied education at the Université de Sherbrooke (Quebec) as well as organizational ethics at Carleton University. Graham Shantz Director General, North Asia Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada Graham Shantz joined Canada’s Department of External Affairs and International Trade in 1990. He has served in multiple capacities at the department’s headquarters in Ottawa, including acting assistant deputy minister, Policy and Strategic Planning Branch; director general, Policy Planning Bureau; chief negotiator, Canada’s Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements; and deputy director, Investment Trade Policy Division. He has also served abroad in Beijing and Jakarta. He was the Canadian ambassador to Spain and Andorra from 2009 to 2012, and has held his current position since 2012. Mr. Shantz also held managerial positions with the Privy Council Office and the Department of Finance Canada, and has served with the Canadian International Development Agency. The Honourable Perrin Beatty Shanghai/Nanjing/Chengdu/Guangzhou President and Chief Executive Officer, The Canadian Chamber of Commerce The Honourable Perrin Beatty is the president and CEO of the 200 000-member Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Canada’s largest and most representative national business association. Mr. Beatty is its principal spokesperson, advocating the policy positions of the Canadian Chamber’s members to the federal government, international organizations, the media and the general public. Prior to joining the Canadian Chamber in August 2007, Mr. Beatty was the president and CEO of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME). A descendant of one of Canada’s most prominent manufacturing families, Mr. Beatty grew up in Fergus, Ontario, and graduated from the University of Western Ontario, in 1971. In 1972, he was elected to the House of Commons as a Progressive Conservative and in 1979, he was appointed minister of State (Treasury Board) in the government of Joe Clark. He held six additional portfolios in subsequent Progressive Conservative governments, including National Revenue in 1984; Solicitor General in 1985; National Defence in 1986; Health and Welfare in 1989; Communications in 1991; and Secretary of State for External Affairs in 1993. In 1994, Mr. Beatty joined a number of private-sector boards and worked as a consultant in the field of communications. He was an honorary visiting professor with the Department of Political Science at the University of Western Ontario. He wrote a weekly column on government and politics for a major Canadian newspaper. From 1995 to 1999, Mr. Beatty was president and CEO of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Mr. Beatty has served on a number of Canadian government advisory committees, is a member of the advisory council of the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute, and is a member of the board of directors of the Canadian International Council. In 2008, Mr. Beatty was named chancellor of the University of Ontario Institute Of Technology. In 2012, Mr. Beatty became a member of the board of directors of Mitsui Canada.
The Honourable John Manley Beijing/Shanghai President and Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE) Mr. Manley is a former deputy prime minister of Canada. He was first elected to Parliament in 1988, and re-elected three times. From 1993 to 2003, he was a minister in the governments of Jean Chrétien, serving in the portfolios of Industry, Foreign Affairs, and Finance, in addition to being deputy prime minister. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Mr. Manley was named chair of a Cabinet committee on public security and anti-terrorism, serving as the Canadian counterpart to Governor Tom Ridge, the first U.S. secretary of Homeland Security. In recognition of the role he played following 9/11, TIME Canada named him 2001 Newsmaker of the Year. After a 16-year career in politics, Mr. Manley returned to the private sector in 2004. Since leaving government, Mr. Manley has continued to be active in public policy, as a media commentator, speaker and adviser to governments of differing political stripes. In addition to his role as president and chief executive officer of the CCCE, Mr. Manley serves on the boards of several publicly traded companies and is active in the not-for-profit sector. Dr. Alain Beaudet President, Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Co-Chair, Canada-China Joint Committee on Science and Technology Dr. Alain Beaudet has been president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) since July 2008. Previously, he was the president and chief executive officer of the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ). Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Beaudet was associate director (research) at the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI). He has also taught in McGill University’s Neurology-Neurosurgery and Anatomy-Cell Biology departments. He has written more than 175 original articles and some 40 monographs and book chapters. Dr. Beaudet has received numerous grants and distinctions. In September 2004, he was awarded the Prix Adrien-Pouliot by the Association francophone pour le savoir (Acfas). In 2007, France bestowed the Order of Academic Palms distinguished Officer’s award to him, and he was made doctor honoris causa of Université Pierre et Marie Curie. In 2011, he became a knight of the National Order of Quebec. In 2012, he was awarded the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) Medal; and was inducted as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2013, he received a doctorat honoris causa from the Université de Sherbrooke. Dr. Beaudet earned a medical degree and a PhD in neuroscience from the Université de Montréal. He did post-doctoral training at the Centre d’études nucléaires in Saclay, France, and at the University of Zurich’s Brain Research Institute in Switzerland.
Dr. Amit Chakma Beijing/Shanghai/Nanjing President and Vice-Chancellor, Western University Amit Chakma is the 10th President & Vice-Chancellor of Western University. Dr. Chakma arrived at Western in July 2009 after serving the University of Waterloo since 2001 as Vice-President, Academic & Provost, and as a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Prior to that, he served as Dean of Engineering and then Vice-President (Research) and International Liaison Officer at the University of Regina. He began his academic career as a professor of chemical and petroleum engineering at the University of Calgary. On November 22, 2012, Western’s Board of Governors re-appointed Dr. Chakma to a second term as President extending to June 30, 2019. Dr. Chakma is a graduate of the Algerian Petroleum Institute (Dip. Ing., 1982) and the University of British Columbia (Master of Applied Science, 1984 and PhD, chemical engineering, 1987). The author of more than 100 articles, he is a leading expert in areas related to petroleum research and energy management. His research interests include mass transfer, gas separation, gas processing, membrane separation, petroleum waste management, greenhouse gas control technology, and energy and environmental systems modeling. In addition to his roles at Western, Dr. Chakma currently serves as Chair of the World University Service of Canada, as a member of the Board of Directors for the Ontario Centres of Excellence, and as a member of the Science, Technology & Innovation Council of Canada. He also served as Chair of the Federal government’s Advisory Panel on Canada’s International Education Strategy. In 1998, Dr. Chakma was recognized with Canada‘s Top 40 Under 40 Award, given annually to honour Canada’s best and brightest in their fields younger than 40. He is also a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and he received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 in recognition of his contributions to Canadian post-secondary education. Dana Fox Founder and Vice Chair, ClevrU Corporation Dana Fox has been recognized as an expert in global training and education by the Canadian e-Learning Enterprise Alliance, which represents e-learning schools, content providers and software companies across Canada. Committed to developing e-teaching in emerging markets, Mr. Fox visited China 24 times in 30 months. Fox was the visionary founder for a patented, multilingual, intelligent and responsive mobile technology that accelerates learning in emerging markets. As a member of the 2012 Canada China Business Council Trade Mission to China, Mr. Fox signed agreements with China Telecom, China Unicom and China Netcom, witnessed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and by the Vice-Premier of China. Agreements were also signed with RenRen, China’s equivalent to Facebook, creating a market for higher education and vocational training. In 2012, ClevrU was ranked #1 by RenRen as the most popular education application; currently it has over 700 000 followers on SINA WEIBO. He is a member of Communitech, MaRS and Mobile First Education, and is an ambassador for Canada’s Technology Triangle and the City of Waterloo.
V. Peter Harder President, Canada-China Business Council (CCBC) and Senior Policy Advisor, Dentons Canada LLP Peter Harder is the senior policy advisor to Dentons Canada LLP. He possesses a wealth of expertise in public policy as a result of his involvement at the centre of government decision making for over 30 years. Prior to joining Dentons, Mr. Harder was a long-serving deputy minister with the Government of Canada. First appointed in 1991, he served as the most senior public servant in a number of federal departments including Treasury Board, Solicitor General, Citizenship and Immigration, Industry, and Foreign Affairs and International Trade. At Foreign Affairs, he assumed the responsibilities of the Prime Minister’s personal representative at three G8 summits (Sea Island, Gleneagles and St. Petersburg). In 2000, the Governor General presented Mr. Harder with the Prime Minister’s Outstanding Achievement Award for public service leadership. In 2002, Peter was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for public service. And in 2007, the President of Colombia named Mr. Harder grand master of the Order of San Carlos for his contributions to international relations. In December 2012, the Governor General presented him with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his significant public contributions to Canada. Mr. Harder has joined the boards of Power Financial Corporation, IGM Financial Corporation, Magna International Inc., Northland Power, Telesat Canada, TimberWest and Energizer Resources. He is also a member of the United Church Foundation, the Commonwealth Games Foundation of Canada, Genome Canada, and chairs the National Police Services Advisory Council (RCMP). Peter Kruyt Beijing/Shanghai/Nanjing Chairman, Canada-China Business Council (CCBC) and Vice-President, Power Corporation of Canada Mr. Kruyt became chairman of the Canada-China Business Council in 2003, after serving as vice-chairman for 10 years. As vice-president of Power Corporation of Canada (PCC), he is responsible for and has been involved with all the companies’ investments in China since 1986. He is a director of a number of wholly owned PCC subsidiaries including Victoria Square Ventures, Power Pacific Corporation Limited and La Presse, as well as being an alternate director on the board of CITIC Pacific Ltd. of Hong Kong. When he first joined Power Corporation in 1981, he was executive assistant to Mr. Paul G. Desmarais, PCC’s chairman and chief executive officer. He has served as a member of many non-profit boards including those of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation and of the Center for Interuniversity Research and Analysis on Organizations (CIRANO). He was chair of the board of governors of Concordia University, in Montréal, from 2005 to 2012. Mr. Kruyt obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Concordia University and an MBA from the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD).
Gilles Patry President and Chief Executive Officer, Canada Foundation for Innovation Gilles Patry is president and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). Following a long and distinguished career as a consultant, a researcher and a university administrator, Dr. Patry brings to the CFI a wealth of experience from both the private and academic sectors. A graduate from the University of Ottawa and the University of California (Davis), Dr. Patry was president and vice-chancellor of the University of Ottawa from 2001 to 2008. Dr. Patry is a Member of the Order of Canada, a recipient of the Order of Ontario and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He has received honorary doctorates from the University of Waterloo and McMaster University, and was named Executive of the Year in 2004 by the Regroupement des gens d’affaires de la Capitale nationale. In 2009, he was also named Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Pléiade of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie. Yuen Pau Woo Beijing/Shanghai President and Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada Mr. Woo is president and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, which is an independent, not-for-profit think-tank based in Vancouver, providing current and comprehensive research, analysis and information on Canada’s trans-Pacific relations. Deeply involved in research and analysis on Canada-China relations, Mr. Woo is a thought leader on contemporary Asian affairs and trans-Pacific relations, and a strong advocate of Canada’s trans-Pacific ties in trade, investment, education, innovation and civic engagement. He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, in recognition of his contribution to Canada-Asia relations. Mr. Woo is on the editorial board of the journal Pacific Affairs, and is an active member of the Global Council of the Asia Society, the Mosaic Institute, the Public Policy Forum, the Vancouver Academy of Music, and the Greater Vancouver Advisory Board for the Salvation Army. He has served on the Standing Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, and as an advisor/consultant to the World Bank, APEC, the OECD, the Asian Development Bank, the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Centre, and the Canadian Ditchley Foundation. Mr. Woo was born in Malaysia and raised in Singapore. He has lived in Canada since 1988. He previously worked for the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation.
