Chinese Tourism numbers in B.C. are way up, thanks in part to the record-breaking heat

The record-breaking heat has been very good for B.C.’s tourism industry.
For many attractions and hotels this has been the busiest season in years.
The Capilano Suspension Bridge says tourism is up about 20 per cent this year, and they beat all of their own records in June, July and August.
The Four Seasons Vancouver says this is about the best season they have had in the past 10 years.
It’s not only the weather though. With the U.S. economy improving, B.C. has seen more tourists from the United States, but the most tourists have come from China.
This year, for the first time, China has tied with the United Kingdom for the most tourists to B.C., behind the United States.
“We are seeing less of the people who are coming in here for all inclusive, sightseeing, to people who are looking for more experiential types of vacations,” said Stephen Pearce with Tourism Vancouver, “and paying more attention to regions of Canada, rather than travelling all across Canada.”
“And that’s great for us because we’re trying to get them downtown, and we want them to pay attention and travel up to Whistler. We want them to go to Victoria, and of course the Okanagan, so we’re blessed with riches here and the Chinese are starting to discover that.”
The cruise ship season is also picking up; overall cruise ship traffic is up about 20 per cent.
