Bodyguards have been assigned to protect the nephew of late billionaire Nina Wang Kung Yu-sum around the clock after he escaped serious injury in an attack that took place under the noses of plain-clothes police.
Police arrested eight suspected members of the Wo Shing Wo triad after the attack on Kung Ho in the Tsuen Wan headquarters of the Chinachem Group.
"It happened all of a sudden," Albert Hui Kwai-sang of the New Territories South crime unit said, explaining how the victim could be harmed while the attackers were under surveillance. He said police received a tip-off about an attack in the area but did not know who the target was.
Kung, 36, younger son of Chinachem chairman Kung Yan-sum, suffered mouth injuries and was in stable condition last night in Yan Chai Hospital. His wife, secretary to her father-in-law, was unhurt.
The couple had arrived in a Volkswagen Golf at the car park in the basement of Nina Tower in Yeung Uk Road shortly before 9am. "When the victim alighted from the vehicle, four assailants - one carrying an umbrella - approached and assaulted him," Hui said.
The attack lasted for a few seconds before officers who had followed the gang into the car park subdued the four thugs.
At the same time, a seven-seat vehicle parked outside Nina Tower, believed to be a getaway car, sped off. It was intercepted outside Tsuen Wan Court in Tai Ho Road after a brief chase. When three men inside refused to open the door, police broke the windows and arrested them.
The eighth man, who jumped into a taxi outside Nina Tower, was arrested when police stopped the cab 1.5 kilometres away in Wai Tsuen Road.
A police source said an initial investigation showed the gang was hired to carry out the attack.
It is understood anti-triad officers are investigating whether the attack is related to a dispute over money or a woman. Police said there was no evidence to suggest it was a kidnap attempt.
Hui said the victim did not receive threats or warnings before the attack. "We are looking into all possible clues," he said.
After a tip-off three days ago about an attack on an unknown target, more than 60 officers were carrying out surveillance along Yeung Uk Road. "Intelligence indicated a wounding plot might be carried out by non-ethnic-Chinese persons in an area on Yeung Uk Road, which covers a large area," Hui said.
The men were put under surveillance after they were seen acting suspiciously around the seven-seat car at 8.30am.
Kung Yan-sum runs the property empire left by his sister after he won a legal battle against fung shui master Peter [then called Tony] Chan Chun-chuen over Wang's estate. Kung Ho manages a subsidiary involved in real estate management and security. Chinachem did not comment.
