Richmond city councillors rebuff motion
pushing for more English on signs
Richmond city council rejected the petition of a group of citizens calling for a bylaw that would force all businesses to display store signs in one of Canada's official languages.
“We are the new minority,” said Marlene Esplen to the Vancouver Sun. “A lot of people around here are too scared to talk about this issue.”
The issue has raised tensions in a city where Chinese is the mother tongue of a majority of citizens.
On Top Story, School Board Trustee Kenny Chiu said that while having signs in English would ultimately be good in the long-term for business, legislation was not the best way to deal with the problem.
"I do not want Richmond to turn into a mini Quebec, with police with tapes and measuring signs," he said. "It's not going to work. It creates an animosity.
"Education, rather than legislation, is the way to go."
